Several students in the Teaching and Training program at Limestone County Career Tech visited our Early Learning Academy this morning to lead several fun, hands-on activities.
Earlier this fall, Limestone County Schools implemented the Early Learning Academy, an employee childcare program. It's located on the campus of Piney Chapel. The goal is not only to provide affordable childcare for our employees, but to help with recruitment and retention efforts as well.
Our 5th grade students spent last week learning about cotton and the many uses of it. As part of their lesson, they took a field trip to the cotton gin at the Associated Growers Co-Op where they learned what happens from the time the cotton arrives until it's shipped out.
STATE OF EDUCATION: It was a great morning at the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce State of Education forum. Superintendent Dr. Randy Shearouse, along with Limestone County Career Technical Center Director Vince Green, were both panelists for the event. The forum served as a great opportunity to hear about the progress being made, and the successes and challenges facing our leaders and the District.
NIGHT OF THE BANDS: All six of our high school band programs took the field last night in a Limestone County exhibition at East Limestone High School. They all did a phenomenal job showcasing their talents! We wish each program the best as they continue their marching and competition season.
Several of our schools have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month lately. On Monday, Tanner Elementary School Counselor Clerk, Mrs. Esperanza and her sister TES Parent Liaison Mrs. Hilda, shared a family tradition from their home country of Panama with students. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15.
Limestone County teachers, staff, and administrators from across the district attended or facilitated professional development on Wednesday. From teachers to child nutrition, administrators, coaches, and more, classrooms were filled with the sights and sounds of instruction and collaboration as our employees sharpened their knowledge and skills to meet the needs of our students.
Due to the potential of flash flooding and gusty winds, Limestone County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay Friday, September 13. Given the forecast, this will allow for a safer commute to school for our staff and students. Bus drivers will have greater visibility with the later start as well, allowing them to avoid any potential road hazards. Please stay safe and stay weather aware through the night.
NEVER FORGET: In honor of the September 11th anniversary, students enrolled in the Public Safety Academy at the Limestone County Career Technical Center took time Wednesday to not only remember those who lost their lives, but to honor those who made sacrifices that day as well. The students climbed 96 flights of stairs in honor of the flights that were climbed by first responders on that day in 2001.
OPPORTUNITIES AWAIT: Juniors and seniors from across the district had a chance to explore post secondary options today during a college fair on the campus of Athens State University.
The Limestone County Board of Education approved a ticket price increase for athletic events during its board meeting Tuesday night. This is due to the rise of cost in officials and security. Effective August 22, 2024, ticket prices will be as follows:
Varsity football adult tickets: $10
Adult tickets for all other sports: $8
Student tickets will remain at $5. There will also be no charge for general parking.
Earlier today Senator Tim Melson stopped by several of our schools to drop off athletic supplies for the upcoming season. Thank you senator for your support of our schools and communities!
THANK YOU: The last several weeks Jimmy Smith Buick-GMC, has been collecting school supplies for our students. Thanks to their efforts, Superintendent Dr. Randy Shearouse was able to deliver those supplies to Tanner Elementary School today.
We appreciate the generosity of our community, and the staff at Jimmy Smith for their support of our schools.
Members of the local media had a chance to talk with our football coaches and players about the upcoming season during our annual Limestone County Media Day today sponsored by TOC-The Orthopaedic Center.

The East Limestone High School fishing team recently captured the 2024 Alabama Student Angler Bass Fishing Association's High School State Championship. On Tuesday night, Superintendent Dr. Randy Shearouse and board members recognized them for their achievement.
Our Summer of Achievement in Reading (SOAR) and 21st Century programs are off to a great start at all of our elementary schools! Through these summer programs students are able to participate in science, technology, enrichment, art, and music (STEAM) activities, as well as get reading and math instruction.

Our 2nd Annual After-School Robotics Expo was held today in Carter Gymnasium on the campus of Athens State University. Middle School teams from all six high schools held demonstrations throughout the morning. Team 34 Robotics was on hand as well.
The Limestone County Career Technical Center held a signing day for 41 seniors Wednesday. During the event, students either signed letters of intent to become employees at local businesses or to join a post secondary program at Calhoun Community College.
